Pique-Nique En Blanc 2024: Meet me at "Kingsbury Commons" in Pease Park

First of all, it never rains on the Pique-Nique En Blanc......

Except for that one time......

But the skies have lightened, the birds are singing, and the players have returned to the pickleball courts, so we are going forward with our original plan!  And the literal silver lining is that it won't be HOT or too BRIGHT!

Kingsbury Commons? What?  What's that???

It's here:

https://peasepark.org/kingsbury-commons

And it's beautiful.   We are shifting our original location within the park a little bit to avoid the low spots, but we feel certain that we won't be muddy on the lawn near the Kingsbury Commons entrance to the Park.  That said - it's definitely not the year for white satin pumps......

Eyesore's birthday was here yesterday, and they did see a lot of rain this am, but we have inspected the grounds and feel like we will we be ok.  In fact, we hope that there will be fewer park visitors this evening due to the weather and it won't be quite as crowded as usual.  But it will of course be HUMID and there will be mosquitos I am sure so bring bug spray!

Even so, parking is SCARCE.  But the folks at the Pease Park Conservancy recommend the following for getting to the park.

https://peasepark.org/parking

If you do drive, carpooling is a MUST.  It's probably a good idea to drop off your things at the park entrance and then have one person park your car in the lot at Austin Recreation Center (by House Park) and walk back.

A Rideshare from another central location is also a great idea.  Use this address.  1100 Kingsbury Road.

You may even spot a TROLL in the park!

See you at 6 - but not a moment before!

REMINDER for the veterans and important info for the newbies:

Please read this important information about the Pique-Nique! We are making a final decision about the weather, but the following is the game plan  - no matter the location.  Plan to arrive at the location promptly at 6, no earlier!

The Pique-Nique is a flash mob and so you SHOULD NOT get there early to set up.  The fun of this is it's spontaneity!  Watching the park go from open lawn to a dinner party in just a few minutes is magical for everyone.  Every year, my favorite moment is watching the group assemble and get set up.

The Pique-Nique happens in a public space and other folks may very well be around and wishing that they could join us.  In fact, all of this info is available on this public website, so who knows - maybe some adventuresome people WILL join us.  Like the Parisian original - we are a rogue pop-up event!  Just be respectful of the space and others and go with it.

Once on-site look for the group in white!  Our Field Marshalls will all be wearing white flowers and they will direct you where to set your table.  This event gets bigger every year and we try to keep everyone together so please do follow their directions.

We combine all our tables to form several really long banquet tables.  The Marshalls will guide you on how to set this up the most effectively and where to store your gear.  Set up your tables and chairs and lay your tables but please don't sit down until before the tables are all laid.  Make sure that you can stash any coolers or folded up wagons under your table or be prepared to leave them well to the side of all the tables.  Some of those folding tables can be tricky to set up - do a practice run so that we can set this up quickly.  Remember, it's a flash-mob.

Take the opportunity to wander around and meet your fellow diners while everyone is getting set up. Maybe you should have a drink and appreciate everyone's outfits and the park while we gather.

6:30 PM  Watch for the signal and wave your napkin to show that our flash-mob dinner party has begun.  Eat, Drink and Be Merry!

8:07 PM  Sunset!

8:15 The prizes will be announced and awarded!

    • le prix du duc/de la duchesse is given for the best attire
    • le prix du comte/de la comtesse is given for the best decor
    • le prix du marquis/de la marquise is given for the best meal
    • le prix du vicomte/de la vicomtesse is given for the best newcomer

9PM  Clean up and Disappear into the Night.  This is the most important part of the evening as we must LEAVE NO TRACE of the revelry.  Make sure to have a trash bag for any refuse and take EVERYTHING away with you to recycle or dispose of.
          See you at 6!!

You want me to bring WHAT??

          I know, it's a lot to ask.

Bring your table, bring your chair, convince your friend to dress in white.  For real?

                  Yes, for real.

Your participation defines this special evening where Austinites gather together in one of our fair city's most beautiful locations for a magical dinner party.  I know how fascinating you are and since everyone brings a friend you are sure to meet someone new and fabulous!  And trust me, the Pique-Nique always impresses.  Your guest will be so happy you invited him or her.
Please DO RSVP by April 22nd

Don't let the prospect of having to do a little leg-work put you off.  Consider that once you figure out what table you'll use, you won't have to go through the exercise next year.  And you WILL want to do it again next year.

And did I mention the fabulous prizes for those who are externally motivated?  If you really throw down, you could win a major award:

        • le prix du duc/de la duchesse is given for the best attire
        • le prix du comte/de la comtesse is given for the best decor
        • le prix du marquis/de la marquise is given for the best meal
        • le prix du chevalier/de la chevalière is given for the best newcomer effort!

        • And of course the award is accompanied by a special surprise!

I mean, you could go all out like these folks.

          But really, it's not necessary.

..... But don't let me stop you either!!

Besides, haven't you always wanted to be part of a flash-mob?  But one that doesn't require you to dance or sing but rather, do something that we are all good at?  Like going to a dinner-party?
And in case you are not motivated by promises of prizes, here are a few more photos to inspire you.

          Tables and Chairs??

This is not a cause for stress.  Here are some helpful hints and resources:

The best tables and chairs are the kind that you borrow!  Someone you know has a card table or a folding banquet table in their closet or garage.  You probably want one that's between 30" and 34' wide.  We push all the tables together to form really long ones so it rmust be square or rectangular.
          One like this?

Or if you are coming with another couple something like this?  In fact, dividing and conquering is KEY when it comes to the Pique-Nique!  You'll be really happy if you can organize with another couple or two and split up the logistics and the food, for example.

You want it to be about 30" wide so that all the tables will line up.  After a few of these, I invested in this one because it is LIGHT and stores easily.  See?

Now THIS is cool!  If I didn't already have one, I think I might consider this one.

These are the least expensive (and lightest) chairs I have found.

But any kind of folding chair is fine and no you don't have to spray paint them white.  Just please don't bring those nylon chairs that you take to your kid's soccer game.

But again - beg, borrow and steal them if you can!  And check out these clever ways to wheel your gear to the pique-nique!

You are invited to Un Pique-Nique en Blanc 2024

          Cher ami,

Over 30 years ago, a Frenchman organized a secret picnic in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris.  Since he couldn't get an official permit for a large group of friends, he told his guests where to meet him at the last minute and told them to all wear white so that they could find each other in the park.  Thus were born the Dîners En Blanc; a phenomenon that has spread across the globe.  Your hostess was inspired by the original event to bring Paris to Texas and organize a dîner with Paris style and Austin soul!

NB - Someone FINALLY bought the officially licensed Diner En Blanc event and hosted the first Austin Diner En Blanc in November of 2019.  Last fall a local non-profit even hosted an unlicensed event.  WE are older, wiser and a ROGUE event - like the original!

You have been invited to Un Pique-Nique En Blanc because you are the personal friend of or share a personal interest with the organizer or with a past guest.  On Sunday, April 28th, we will celebrate the simple pleasure of good food, good wine, old friends and new, and the art of dining in a beautiful outdoor setting for the eleventh time.  As the Pique-Nique enters its second decade, the most important part of the evening remains the pleasure of your company, but we are providing this list of recommendations to help you and your guest capture some of the magic of the event.

Les Amis – You are cordially requested to bring a guest to the Pique-Nique.  This can be a spouse, friend, colleague, dance partner, neighbor or lover – anyone willing to carry their own chair and pack a picnic to enjoy in the company of strangers is okay with us.  If you attended last year's Pique-Nique then you and your guest from last year will each bring a new guest.  See how this works?  This is how the Pique-Nique gets bigger and better every year! Past attendees please make sure to get me the names and contact information of your guest so that they can learn the location of our picnic on the 28th!

Le Locale – This year we will descend on a local park for our Pop-up Picnic.  The specific location will be announced the day of the event but please plan to carpool, rideshare or have to park several blocks away as parking is at a premium in our fair city and a we have a large guest list.  Once revealed, you will be delighted with our spectacular location in the city.  You’ll know you’ve found us when you see the group in white.

La Couture - White attire is de rigueur, and we encourage you to dress in whatever white fashion that expresses your own appreciation for style, fashion, beauty and creativity.  A little bling is always fun, as long as the overall effect is white.  Gentlemen do not be discouraged!  This is your moment to dress like Jay Gatsby.  Or John Legend.  And why white?  Because the pictures are spectacular.  And it will look amazing at night. Creativity is also appreciated - you never know if you might see a group in Wimbledon whites, or sailors on shore leave, or get a lesson in chemistry - we've even been known to spot a bride...

La Logistique – Please bring a square or rectangular folding table, as they will be combined with the other diners’ tables to form impressively long tables.  Card tables or folding banquet tables are perfect. You will also bring chairs; white would be nice, but not absolutely necessary (no nylon camp chairs please.)

Le Décor – Once set, each table at the event is a beautiful place to dine! Diners should not bring disposable dishes but set their tables with white dishes on a white tablecloth.  These do not have to be fine china;  melamine and lucite can look just as elegant – or rustic or shabby chic – whatever suits your style.  Again, get creative – we would love to see real silverware, candlesticks, and vases of flowers.

Le Dîner - This event is meant to inspire the chefs inside us all!  And, in keeping with French tradition, we suggest you and your guest prepare three courses for this event (but they can be three desserts if you really want!)  This isn't a potluck, everyone is bringing their own nosh, but you'll probably be everyone's new friend if you bring a taste for your new table companions.  And please don't go overboard with the cocktails (for propriety's sake.)  We don’t want the passersby to hate us – just wish they could join us!

Leave No Trace - Part of the magic of this event is that it gathers so many friends yet leaves no trace at the end of the evening. Please bring your own trash bags and plan to dispose of any waste or recyclables at home.

Le Pique-Nique is an exceptional dinner party for our many guests, and we know that genteel manners will again dominate this very special evening from beginning to end.  Please be so kind as to let us know if you’ll be attending by,  April 22nd and please friend me, Pique-Nique EnBlanc-Austin on Facebook and follow me on Instagram.  You MUST RSVP to remain on the list for next year's event and to receive the location on the day of the event.  We appreciate that you are willing to put so much of yourselves into making this event extraordinary.  And we would like to offer a bit of an enticement to go the extra mile – we offer prizes at the event – for the best attire, best table setting, best spread and best newcomer.

              Merci and see you soon!
